Softening

Water SoftenersHard water, made gentle again.

A water softener removes the calcium and magnesium that make water hard. The result is less scale in pipes, boilers and heaters, and fewer white marks on taps and fittings.

What it is

In plain words.

Hard water picks up calcium and magnesium as it passes through chalk and limestone. Heat it or let it dry, and those minerals leave a white scale. Scale narrows pipes, clogs shower heads, coats heating surfaces so they waste energy, and leaves spots on dishes and glass. In laundry it makes soap work harder and wears fabric faster.

A softener solves this with ion exchange. Water flows through a bed of resin beads that hold sodium. The beads grab calcium and magnesium, which are held more strongly, and release sodium in their place. When the resin is full, a brine rinse recharges it. We size the softener to your hardness and daily use, then supply, install and maintain it.

How it works

Stage by stage.

  1. Pre-filtration

A sand filter removes suspended solids first, so dirt does not foul the resin bed.

  2. Ion exchange

Hard water passes through resin beads, which swap calcium and magnesium for sodium.

  3. Soft water out

Softened water leaves the vessel for use, with hardness removed.

  4. Backwash

When the resin is exhausted, a reverse flow loosens the bed and flushes out trapped dirt.

  5. Brine regeneration

Salt brine from the brine tank passes through the resin, pushing off calcium and magnesium.

  6. Rinse

Fresh water rinses out the excess brine, and the softener is ready for service again.

Options

Built to suit the site.

  • Time-based regeneration

A timer starts regeneration on a fixed schedule. Simple and reliable where water use is steady.

  • Meter-based regeneration

A water meter counts the volume treated and regenerates only when needed, saving salt and water.

  • Duplex softener

Two vessels work in turn, so one supplies soft water while the other regenerates.

Questions

Asked before every project.

How do I know if my water is hard?

A simple test measures hardness as mg/L of calcium carbonate. On a commonly used scale, water below 60 is soft, 61 to 120 moderately hard, 121 to 180 hard and above 180 very hard.

Does a softener remove dissolved salts?

No. It swaps hardness minerals for sodium, so total dissolved solids stay much the same. If you need to lower dissolved salts, you need RO or a DM plant.

What does a softener need day to day?

Mainly salt in the brine tank. Automatic softeners handle backwash and regeneration on their own, and we can look after servicing under an AMC.
